Company History
The healthcare organization now known as Northfield Hospital & Clinics was formed in 1910. Local physicians and other civic leaders created a private association to own and operate a hospital in a wood frame house on the corner of Eighth and Water streets, on what then was the edge of Northfield’s business district.
It wasn’t Northfield’s first hospital. In 1905, the International Organization of Odd Fellows built an impressive facility on its campus west of downtown, but within five years, it faltered and faded from view.
For 29 years, the wood frame building on Eighth and Water served the community well. The city of Northfield assumed ownership of the hospital in 1934. In 1939, with the aid of a federal WPA grant, a new two-story, 31-bed hospital was constructed on West Second Street.
That hospital went through a number of expansions and improvements over the years, including the addition of a nursing home in 1963. By the mid-90s, opportunities to expand the campus in a residential neighborhood were limited, and it proved challenging to adapt an aging facility to the needs of 21st century medicine.
The hospital Board of Directors developed a vision for an integrated health campus that would provide enough space to assemble a continuum of healthcare services in one location. In 2001, the hospital broke ground on a new 37-bed hospital on land leased from St. Olaf College. It opened in the spring of 2003.
Since then, a number of primary care and specialty clinics have been added to the organization. NHC now includes five primary care FamilyHealth Medical Clinics, located in Northfield, Lonsdale, Farmington, Lakeville and Elko; Women’s Health Center; Orthopedic & Fracture Clinic; Northfield Eye Physicians and Surgeons; and the Center for Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.
NHC continues to pursue its vision of expanding the range of medical services available locally and of being a vital healthcare resource to Northfield and surrounding communities for years to come.
