History of Chase County Community Hospital

Back in the mid-twenties, due to the vision and courage of two young nurses, Chase County was fortunate in acquiring its first hospital. Elva and Evea Yaw were the twin daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Yaw. They were early settlers in the Champion Valley. The twins entered nurse’s training school at Methodist Hospital in Omaha. Following graduation, they decided to return to Chase County, open a small hospital and practice their profession. A year later, they purchased hospital beds and accessories to care for patients in their own home. In 1925, Elva and Evea Yaw bought a house in Imperial and called their venture a 10 bed Home Hospital. Dr. George Hoffmeister then moved his emergency services to a room in their ‘Home Hospital’. It was not long after they realized they needed more room and an operating room, therefore adding on another room. In 1929, due to some personal changes by the existing staff the ‘home hospital’ was rented out as a residence and the equipment was sold.

It was not long after when many local businessmen of Imperial realized a great need for a hospital here and decided to canvass the surrounding territory to raise sufficient funds to start a new hospital. The Imperial Community Hospital opened in the spring of 1931 and added on more rooms in 1958. The next groundbreaking ceremony took place in 1976 and the ‘New’ Chase County Hospital commenced in the summer of 1977. In 1992, an addition for outpatient and physical therapy services was constructed, and 25 years later, groundbreaking occurred again to add a hospital affiliated clinic.

Chase County Community Hospital now employs more that one hundred in the various departments. The affiliated Chase County Clinics employs two physicians and physician assistant. Other physicians from local clinics also staff the hospital along with many specialists offering their services on a monthly basis.

Other accomplishments in the past twenty-five years include Rural Health Ventures, Inc, a nonprofit corporation formed by Chase, Perkins and Dundy County Hospital providing a mobile ultrasound service. The hospital has expanded to provide a multitude of services for the community including mammography, cardiac rehab, physical therapy, CT scans, colonoscopies, echocardiograms, nuclear medicine, and a numerous of types of surgery. The Specialty Clinic offers a Podiatrist, General Surgeons, Vascular Surgeon, Gynecologist, Orthopedic Specialists, Urologists, Neurologists, Pediatrician, Cardiologist, Ophthalmologist and Oncologist. The hospital is continually striving to bring more specialists to the community as well as improve our current facility to maintain up-to-date medical services.
