Who We Are

Celebrating 25 years, Coordinated Health (CH) is a privately held, physician-owned, specialized hospital network delivering an accessible, affordable and fully integrated continuum of care in Eastern PA and Western NJ. With 1,200 team members, our network focuses on Orthopedics, Joint Replacement, Sports Medicine, Primary Care and Women’s Health. CH is the only hospital in the Lehigh Valley to earn the Top Performer rating from The Joint Commission (three years in a row) and has repeatedly been recognized for the highest patient satisfaction scores from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and lowest infection rates by one of the country’s leading consumer advocacy groups.
How We Do Healthcare Differently

Healthcare costs have been rising for the last 40 years. At Coordinated Health we believe that patients and employers deserve better. They deserve better accessibility, care and outcomes, all at a lower cost. We achieve this through true integration, or what we call the CH Way. The CH Way is about making a better experience for our patients through the seamless assembling and coordination of their care.

From their first point of engagement on our website/patient portal or patient services center; to meeting with one of our world-class surgeons/cross-functional clinical teams for a consultation, to stepping into our state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging suite, to undergoing their procedure and recovery in our boutique-like hotel/hospital, to receiving rehab at home or in one of our centers, to reviewing and paying their bill all on one clear and easy-to-understand statement, we work hard every day to reduce cost and complexity from healthcare. We call this integrated approach to care the CH Way.

We believe that when we deliver the CH Way and CH Experience to our patients/employers, their problems are solved faster, they feel better, they are empowered and more productive. Ultimately, our patients + Coordinated Health are Better.Together. Better accessibility, quality of care, outcomes, simplicity, all at a lower cost. That’s how we do healthcare differently.

Company History

A Unique Value-Based Healthcare Model Born in Bethlehem, PA

25 years ago, Dr. Emil DiIorio had a big dream to change how healthcare is delivered in the Lehigh Valley. Dr. DiIorio originally founded Coordinated Health (CH) in 1987 as Sports Medicine Lehigh Valley and the Industrial Medicine Clinic, located at 2775 Schoenersville Road in Bethlehem. The Sports Medicine clinic served Lehigh University’s sports teams, while the Industrial Medicine Clinic served area businesses like Bethlehem Steel, Crayola, and UPS. The visionary integrated model that DiIorio constructed 25 years ago combined orthopedic services with advanced imaging and physical therapy, all under one roof, to provide patients with a simplified approach to their care, with better access and better control in delivering consistently effective and high quality care at a lower cost – now known as value-based healthcare. The orthopedic practice grew to include a full suite of musculoskeletal support – sports medicine, joint replacement, spine (orthopedics, chiropractic and physiatry), hand & wrist, foot & ankle, rheumatology, athletic training, physical and occupational therapy, and advanced imaging. All aspects of the CH service model are integrated for better efficiency and effectiveness – cross-functional teams, proprietary processes and IT systems.

It is Dr. DiIorio’s integrated value-based model that Michael Porter in Harvard Business Review, October 2013, described as “The Strategy That Will Fix Healthcare.”

Porter, who founded The Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at Harvard University, supports that the new strategy that will fix healthcare is focused on maximizing value for patients at its core: that is, achieving the best outcomes at the lowest cost. Porter states, “We must move away from a supply-driven health care system organized around what physicians do and toward a patient-centered system organized around what patients need. We must shift the focus from the volume and profitability of services provided-physician visits, hospitalizations, procedures, and tests-to the patient outcomes achieved. And we must replace today’s fragmented system, in which every local provider offers a full range of services, with a system in which services for particular medical conditions are concentrated in health-delivery organizations and in the right locations to deliver high-value care.”

Several leading healthcare organizations have recognized the benefit of the value-based model and are at varying levels of piloting changes to their organizational structure, systems and processes. Cleveland Clinic and Germany’s Schön Klinik have undertaken large-scale efforts involving multiple components of the value agenda – all in an effort to implement “coordinated care” which has been in our CH DNA for 25 years.
Disrupting the Status Quo

Dr. DiIorio’s dream to deliver value-based healthcare came from the unmet need he saw all around him. “If there’s one industry in America that needs disruption, it’s healthcare,” states DiIorio. “We must do it differently to deliver better value, and that’s what we’re doing at Coordinated Health. We deliver more value by narrowing our service lines and by reaching out to our patients in terms of accessibility. We can’t expect busy people to go to us; we have to go to them, hence our 16 locations. I’d like to disrupt the perception that quality healthcare needs to take place in large ‘towers’ or tertiary care centers. There is a role for them, especially as we have an older and sicker population who needs that type of intensive care, but there’s also a large population of people who just need basic things fixed. In our specialized integrated model, we can do that faster and with less cost to patients and employers.”

Coordinated Health has continued to grow steadily over the years and offers much more than the orthopedic services it did at the beginning – including musculoskeletal, women’s health, primary care, and cardiology and endocrinology, but is still purposefully focused on a limited number of specialties.
The Value In Selective Specialization

“We are not trying to be everything to everyone,” he says, “which is very important because if you try to do that, the effort to be value-based becomes very difficult. The word value-based has been one that has been present in our vocabulary for a long time at CH. What it means to us is getting rid of all the other stuff, because it’s all about the customer – the patients and employers. At the end of the day, the customer’s satisfaction is the most critical.”

CH Today + Looking Forward

The CH integrated provider-based model now supports over 11,000 patient visits per week, in 2 specialized surgery hospitals, an ambulatory surgical center and 16 clinics across eastern PA and western NJ. The 1,200 CH employees also support more than 2,500 local businesses through Employer Health Services.

The CH strategy is continuing to evolve to maintain a unique competitive advantage that links value chain activities to quality care and competitive pricing. It also drills down to the income statement and balance sheet by decreasing complexity, overhead, and cost. For 25 years, CH has maintained an unmatched commitment to excellence in quality, cost and patient satisfaction. As a result, CH has earned a reputation for the best doctors, clinical teams and support staffs in the healthcare industry. That’s why for four consecutive years, CH hospitals have been voted #1 in patient satisfaction as a state and national leader in joint replacements. These metrics are extremely important to all CH teams who hold themselves accountable to consistently measuring and delivering value-based care
