Company History
Hawaiian Rehabilitation Services, Inc was incorporated in 1979. Jean Thompson PT became the sole stockholder in 1981. The clinic started out with 400 sq feet in Kamuela, HI, added a second clinic in Kailua-Kona in 1980, added a third clinic in Kapa'au several years later and a Waikoloa clinic in 2008. Currently we only operate the Kailua Kona clinic, having assisted an employee of Hawaiian Rehabilitation Services to take over two of the north island clinics.
In 2019 Jean's daughter, Katie Lopez, took over ownership and operations of Hawaiian Rehab. Katie’s focus as owner and director of Hawaiian Rehab is to provide exceptional care, develop specialties currently lacking on the island, and work alongside professional alliances to ensure accurate and timely care for our patients. Her leadership has gained Hawaiian Rehab a reputation for providing excellent customer service that treats patients like family, and fostering both a positive and productive workplace culture for her team.
Notable Accomplishments / Recognition
Hawaiian Rehabilitation Services was the first rehabilitation services provider on the West Side of the Big Island in Hawaii. As the only PT/OT/SLP company, we provided services through 4 clinics throughout Kohala, Kamuela, Kona areas.
We added Acupuncture in in 1992. In 2014 we decided to transfer the north clinics to a previous employee who wanted to start his own business, and concentrate our services to the Kailua Kona area.
Jean Thompson, owner and CEO, was recognized by the Hawaii Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association as the "Most Outstanding Physical Therapist in Hawaii" and was the first recipient of this prestigious award. Because of her involvement in the community and APTA/HAPTA professional organization, and her clinic management, she was also given the Hawaii Small Business Association award for "Women in Business Advocate" and the Hawaii Dept of Labor Workforce Development Division's award for "Most Positive Work Environment".
