At Therapeutic Associates Physical Therapy, our passion is helping every patient we treat heal quickly and safely, and to empower them with the knowledge, understanding and inspiration they need to stay active and healthy. We feature innovative rehabilitation services including evidence-based manual therapy, functional exercise and a comprehensive, individualized approach to care. Our physical therapists are dedicated to making sure every patient has a positive, successful experience during their pursuit of recovery, rehabilitation and journey to optimal performance, health and wellness.

Our company is made up of a partnership of clinics, each locally owned by the physical therapists whose commitment to the physical therapy profession, to their patients and to their communities ensures an exceptional standard of care. We continually work to enhance our team’s ability to meet the needs of every patient by supporting our providers’ continuing education and their pursuit of advanced specialty certifications. We strive to remain at the forefront of healthcare education and movement science research, so those we treat receive the most advanced, dynamic care available.

Company History

1952

Therapeutic Associates, Inc. is founded

Jim McKillip, PT, meets Robert Dicus, PT. The two become partners, forming what would become Therapeutic Associates, Inc. Their vision is to help people in safe, caring, and healing environments.



1952

First clinic opens

Jim McKillip, PT, opens TAI’s first clinic in Van Nuys, CA. The clinic is one of the first private practices in the entire country.



1953

First hospital contract

TAI engages in its first hospital contract with Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, CA.



1955

Current statistics

One clinic and one hospital contract in one state (CA)

1961

APTA Self Employment Section is formed

The APTA Self Employment Section (now called the Private Practice Section or “PPS”) is formed. Robert Dicus is instrumental in its development and serves as its first Chairman.

1964

Flanders Physical Therapy opens

Flanders Physical Therapy (now known as Therapeutic Associates Northwest Portland Physical Therapy) opens as our first private practice in Oregon. Dan Jones, PT, is the Director/Owner.

1975

Current statistics

Three clinics and three hospital contracts in two states (CA & OR); Treated more than 150,000 total patients.

1980s

TAI expands throughout Oregon

TAI opens clinics in Albany, Salem, and additional Portland locations.

1983

First clinic in Washington opens

West Seattle Physical Therapy opens as our first clinic in Washington. Steve Anderson, PT, DPT, is the Director/Owner.

1990s

TAI growth

TAI expands into Spokane, Tri-Cities, and Seattle, Washington as well as Bend and Eugene, Oregon and additional Southern Oregon areas.



1990s

Northwest Rehab Alliance

TAI founds Northwest Rehab Alliance, an independent practice association network of private practice therapy clinics.



1991

TAI elects new CEO

Warner Owens, PT, named CEO, taking over the position when founder Jim McKillip retires.



1991

Motion Picture contract

Motion Picture Television Fund contracts with TAI for rehabilitation services in California.



1995

Current statistics

More than 20 clinics and three hospital contracts in three states; Treated more than 750,000 total patients.

1998

TAI elects new CEO

Steve Anderson, PT, DPT, is named CEO.

2010

Steve Anderson PT, DPT, honored

Steve Anderson is awarded the Private Practice Section’s highest honor — the Robert G Dicus Award.



2012

Jennifer Lesko PT, DPT, honored by PTWA

Jennifer Lesko PT, DPT, is awarded the Physical Therapist of the Year award by the Physical Therapy Association of Washington (PTWA).



2018

Scott Wick honored by APTA Private Practice Section

Scott Wick is presented with the Friend of the Private Practice award at the PPS Annual Conference.

2019

TAI growth approaches 100 locations

Combining 85 outpatient practices and 13 contract locations, TAI grows to 98 locations across Oregon, Washington, Idaho and California.
