Nature of Work:

The University of Colorado Anschutz Campus Hemophilia & Thrombosis Center (HTC) is a specialized clinical center of excellence for children and adults with bleeding and clotting disorders within the School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics.  It provides direct comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services to 2400 patients with bleeding and clotting disorders throughout a multi-state region. The unit is comprised of clinical services, laboratory services, pharmacy services, research services and patient psychosocial support programs.

This full time Physical Therapist position is responsible for providing physical therapy services for the HTC including clinical care and education for the bleeding and clotting disorders population. Bleeding patients are the majority of patients and are seen for annual multidisciplinary evaluations as well as visits for acute bleeding episodes, chronic arthropathy caused by bleeding, related orthopedic and functional concerns, and pain complaints. Clotting patients will be seen on an as needed basis for assessment of their affected limb and for post- thrombotic syndrome functional complications.

This position involves seeing patients on the Anschutz Campus, as well as at current and future outreach clinics in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. There may be opportunities for research participation that align with the clinical responsibilities. This position may also provide physical therapy education and representation at community events such as education weekends, outdoor recreation events, and hemophilia summer and family camps. Periodic travel to outreach clinics, regional and national meetings, and educational events will be required.

Position Emphasis: 

Providing skilled physical therapy services for the care of patients with bleeding and clotting disorders as a member of a multidisciplinary team, including: 

• Providing physical therapy evaluation and intervention for bleeding disorder patients during comprehensive clinic visits (in person and telehealth)
• Evaluating and assessing the impact of hemophilic bleeding and hemophilic arthropathy on the patient’s musculoskeletal system and nervous system and its effect on Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s), gait and mobility
• Using examination findings to identify problem areas, plan intervention and educate patients regarding the management of their bleeding disorder
• Planning and implementing physical therapy treatment plans
• Educating patients on an individualized approach to general fitness and activities in the context of their bleeding disorder
• Performing physical therapy evaluations for bleeding disorder patients during acute joint and muscle bleeding visits (in person or by telehealth)
• Providing differential diagnosis of acute bleeding episodes, including where the bleeding episode is located based on musculoskeletal and motor expertise
• Providing teaching on bleed identification to patients, family members and other healthcare providers
• Assessing musculoskeletal and neurological impact of acute bleeding episodes in patients
• Collaborating with the multidisciplinary care team to develop a treatment plan for acute bleeding episodes
• Initiating acute bleed interventions which may include activity restrictions/guidelines, equipment needs, therapeutic interventions, including: gait training, PRICE and splinting for pain relief and enhancing function, exercise instruction and follow-up planning
• Regular outpatient follow-up for post-bleed/subacute physical therapy including therapeutic exercise, activity progression, balance and coordination training, motor control reeducation, manual therapy, and sport-specific training
• Providing pre-and post-operative orthopedic surgery physical therapy and patient education
• Effectively documenting all patient visits in the electronic medical record and preparing evaluations and reports
• Following all federal and institutional research guidelines for ethical research including HIPAA and IRB regulations during care of patients participating in research studies. Participation in research will be in line with clinical responsibilities, and as such evaluation and documentation of findings will be in accordance with research protocols as well as clinical standards
• Preparing and presenting educational presentations within the bleeding- disorders community, to schools and organizations who serve this population, and to other physical therapists and students
• Serving as a physical therapy resource for other healthcare providers, most specifically other community-based physical therapists to whom the bleeding disorder population is referred
• Evaluating limb function in patients with post-thrombotic disorder and potentially developing treatment plans

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

• Degree from an accredited School of Physical Therapy
• Applicant must be licensed as a physical therapist in the state in which applicant currently practices. Obtaining licensure in the state of Colorado is required for this position. Multiple adjoining state licensure will be required in the future. We will pay for out of state licensure that is needed for the care of HTC patients
• Minimum of 2 years of clinical practice as a licensed physical therapist
• Must have experience with electronic medical records documentation or willingness to learn

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications: 

• DPT degree
• Previous experience in orthopedics and/or sports medicine
• Proficiency with point of care musculoskeletal ultrasound
• Minimum of 1 year of clinical experience working with patients with bleeding disorders
• Applicant will possess the qualities of being detail-oriented, self-motivated and a fast learner with good time management skills
• Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills with the ability to take direction
• Experience with effective public speaking/presentation skills
• Experience with clinical research
• Experience with quality and process improvement
